In 1805, the first synagogue was built on the site of the former Jacobin convent, which had been in existence since 1222. It was almost entirely destroyed by bombing during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870.

It was rebuilt between 1873 and 1875 by architect Henri Mazilier in the Hispano-Moorish style, inspired by Islamic Spain, at the expense of the Verdun Jewish community.

In 1872, a rectangular building was erected next to the synagogue, to house the minister and rabbi.
